Position: Animal Care Worker

Location: Carlsbad, CA (On-site)

Schedule: Monday-Friday or Tuesday-Saturday; start times available at 4:00 AM or 5:00 AM

Hourly Rate: $18.00 to $24.00 per hour (depending on experience)

Job Overview:

The Animal Care Worker is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of animal housing equipment and surrounding facility areas. This role plays a vital part in supporting the health and well-being of laboratory animals by ensuring a hygienic and compliant environment.

Responsibilities:

• Transfer animals from soiled to clean caging, ensuring appropriate food, water, and bedding are provided. Promptly notify appropriate personnel of any abnormal animal health or environmental conditions.
• Operate cage washers, autoclaves, and other sanitation equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures.
• Dispose of bedding and waste materials in compliance with regulatory guidelines and facility safety protocols.
• Clean and sanitize tenderfoot floors and other animal-related equipment as required.
• Transport caging supplies and equipment between animal rooms and cage wash areas.
• Maintain sanitary conditions in cage wash rooms, hallways, storage areas, and other support spaces.
• Follow OSHA regulations and internal safety standards when handling chemicals, animals, and powered equipment.
• Report equipment malfunctions or maintenance issues to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
• Provide weekend or holiday support as needed to ensure animal care and facility operations continue uninterrupted.
• Adhere to all required PPE protocols and wear personal protective equipment consistently and properly.

Physical Requirements: This position involves frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting throughout the shift. Candidates must be able to:

• Lift, push, and pull objects up to 50 pounds regularly
• Work in a physically demanding environment that may include exposure to strong cleaning agents, noise, and varying temperatures
• Perform repetitive motions and handle equipment requiring strength and coordination

What We're Looking For:

We're seeking individuals with excellent communication and interpersonal skills who thrive in a fast-paced environment.

• High school diploma or equivalent (required)
• Experience in a laboratory animal or research facility (preferred, but not required)
• Large animal handling (pigs, horses, sheep) a plus
• Familiarity with basic sanitation procedures and safety protocols
• Strong attention to detail and time management
• Willingness to work weekends/holidays on a rotating basis
